Who This Is For
This guide is for families standing in the first stretch of life after a traumatic brain injury — the parent in the hospital chair, the spouse reading discharge papers at midnight, the sibling trying to figure out the next right step before coffee, before work, before anyone else in the house falls apart.
It is also for survivors who are ready to read, or to hand the guide to someone helping them navigate what comes next.
It is not a marketing PDF. It is the guide a family wishes it had at the moment the system stopped leading.
What’s Inside
A
Naming what just happened, and why “the after” is the only honest frame.
F
What a TBI actually is, why it hides, and what to watch for across the cognitive, emotional, physical, and behavioral domains.
T
Bedside advocacy. ER red flags. Documentation that will matter later. The IME doctor explained. Insurance in the first 30 days. When to call a lawyer (and why early matters).
E
Therapy modalities. Handoff cliffs. The caregiver also needs a team. Returning to work, school, and life.
R
The bridge to the long arc. Rebuilding is not returning. What thriving honestly looks like.
A daily symptom log — printable. A bedside questions sheet for the ICU and the first specialist visits. An ER red flags one-pager — designed to live on a refrigerator. A documentation photo checklist. Crisis lines, the Brain Injury Association of America directory, and a vetted reading list.
The Promise
We will not make this sound easier than it is. We will not bury you in clinical language or legal noise. We will not ask you to have every answer, every paper organized, or every emotion in line.
Why It Exists
AFTER | TBI was built by a father who took a call from Colorado State Patrol in February 2018 and spent the next several years learning what no medical school teaches a family: how to advocate inside a fragmented system, how to read symptoms that hide, how to grieve a person who is still alive, and how to keep going on the Wednesday morning three years later.
This guide is the resource he wishes someone had handed his family that February.
