The AFTER | TBI Podcast

Long-form conversations from the bridge between the ICU and the new normal.

The Concept

Every survival story episode starts at the moment things were different.

— : —

We do not begin with the diagnosis. We begin with the moment the diagnosis stopped being theoretical.

Survival Stories

For some guests, that moment is the call from State Patrol. For some, it is the second concussion that didn’t heal like the first. For some, it is the discharge paperwork that didn’t mention anything they were about to live through.

From there, the conversation moves into what worked, what didn’t, what the system failed to tell them, and what they would tell the family standing where they were standing five years ago.

These are not seven-minute interviews. They are not motivational. They are not built around a sound bite. They are slow, specific, and honest — the kind of conversation that earns trust by proving we have been here.

Expert Episodes

Every expert episode starts with the specific avenue in TBI that provider treats, treatment modalities they have seen success with, and the medical authority they have.

From the most catastrophic of cases they have treated, to the everyday experience of their clients, these providers are here to share their wealth of knowledge and to provide peer-reviewed guidance to the survivor and their family.

Vestibular, vision, occupational, and speech-language therapists. Personal injury attorneys, patient advocates, and insurance navigators. Social workers, school counselors, and disability rights advocates.

About the Show

The AFTER | TBI Podcast is hosted by Sarah Catherine Hoover, editorial lead at AFTER, with regular appearances by Robert Hoover, founder of AFTER | TBI and Hoover TBI Law. Bob’s lived experience as the father of a TBI survivor — and his decades in personal injury litigation — shape the questions the show asks. Sarah shapes the conversations that follow.

The show is produced by AFTER | TBI in partnership with Hoover TBI Law. It is not a legal advertising vehicle. It is a publication.

Pitch a Guest

If you are a TBI survivor, family member, clinician, attorney, or specialist with something to share — or if you know one — we want to hear from you.

We are particularly looking for voices from underrepresented communities in the TBI conversation, including military veterans, communities of color, uninsured and underinsured families, and pediatric perspectives.
