Our Story

A publication for life after a brain injury.

AFTER | TBI is a content platform for families standing in the first stretch of life after a traumatic brain injury. It is the map we wish someone had handed us.

The Masthead

What we hold to

A

We acknowledge the split.

Life is different now. We don’t pretend it isn’t.

S

We see the invisible.

TBI is a mapless territory. We are the compass.

P

We protect what matters.

Legal expertise is the shield. Lived experience is the light.

W

We walk the path.

The hardest part isn’t the day of the injury. It’s the Wednesday morning three years later, alone in navigating the chaos of a brain injury, and unsure of the next right step.

What AFTER | TBI Is

The resource library we wish someone had handed our family

AFTER | TBI is a content platform for families standing in the first stretch of life after a traumatic brain injury.

It is the resource library, podcast, newsletter, and educational guide collection we wish someone had handed our family the morning the call came. It is not a law firm. It is not a clinic. It is not a wellness brand. It is a publication — built on lived experience, sharpened by legal expertise, and written for the family doing the actual work of putting a life back together after a brain injury.

We exist because the medical system saves the life and then sends the family home with no map. The map is what we are building.

The Story Behind AFTER

In February 2018, Robert Hoover got a call from Colorado State Patrol.

His oldest son had been seriously injured in a rear-end collision on Vail Pass. By the time Robert reached St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver, CT scans showed bleeding on both hemispheres of his son’s brain. The injury was significant enough that the ICU, not the ER, was where his son would spend the next eighty hours.

Robert had spent his career as a trial lawyer working complex injury cases. He understood crashes, negligence, and how a normal day becomes a file full of records, photographs, and medical language. None of it made the room easier to stand in.

When the immediate crisis passed and his son was discharged, he found the system stopped leading. There was no quarterback after discharge. There was a discharge form, a stack of pamphlets, a parking validation, and a family suddenly responsible for coordinating neuropsychologists, vestibular therapists, vision specialists, insurance reviewers, school accommodations, and a young man who looked fine to the outside world and was not.

Robert spent the next several years learning what no medical school teaches a family: how to advocate inside a fragmented system, how to read symptoms that hide, how to document what no one else is documenting, how to grieve a person who is still alive, and how to keep going on the Wednesday morning three years later when the casseroles have stopped and the hard part has only just begun.

AFTER | TBI is what he wishes someone had handed his family that February.

What We Are. And What We Are Not.

AFTER is a publication

We talk about identity, family, fatigue, marriage, money, work, school, insurance, and the quiet, exhausting work of rebuilding a life. We talk about the shape of recovery — not as a comeback, not as a story arc — but as a split between the life before and the life after, both of which are yours.

Not a law firm.

We do not take cases. We do not promise compensation. We do not exist to find clients. The legal work happens elsewhere, at Hoover TBI Law — a sibling organization with the same warmth, the same seriousness, and an entirely different job to do.

Not a clinic.

We do not diagnose. We do not prescribe. We do not replace any doctor, therapist, or specialist in the room with you. We translate, we orient, we name what is happening, and we point toward the right kind of expert at the right moment.

Not a wellness brand.

We do not sell breakthroughs. We do not promise transformation. We meet you on a Wednesday morning, three years in, with no slogan and no shortcuts.

The Promise

Everything we publish has to pass one test: will this still serve a family three years from now? If yes — we ship it. If it sounds like a brochure, a hotline script, a wellness influencer, or a law firm fighting for compensation, we rewrite it until it doesn’t.
